The Los Angeles Clippers confirm this shred of a report from Lisa Dillman on the L.A. Times website.

According to the Clippers, point guard Jason Williams has decided to stop playing basketball. There is no known reason for his decision, and messages left with his agents have not been returned.

Williams signed as a free agent with L.A. just in August, and evidently decided at some point since then few weeks that he has had enough.

There had been talk this off-season that he might play overseas.

Williams, who played high school sports with NFL star Randy Moss, entered the league in 1998 as one of the most exciting players of his generation. His work as the ringleader of Rick Adelman’s thrilling Sacramento Kings teams is the stuff of YouTube legend.

I remember once clearly seeing him hold the ball behind his back, at a full run, as he popped it with his opposite elbow to a streaking teammate. Even though I saw it, I wasn’t sure it had really happened.

Under old-school Coach Hubie Brown in Memphis, Williams learned to be less flashy, which may or may not have contributed to his winning a championship ring with the Miami Heat in 2006.

In more recent years, Williams’ star has faded somewhat as he has dealt with various injuries. At 33, however, a decade into his career, I don’t think anybody suspected he may be ready to leave basketball, so needless to say this comes as a shock.

New Lakers guard Sun Yue looked a little tired yesterday at his introductory news conference, theoretically because of a little jet lag and all the hubbub. Theoretically.

Turns out, the kid has mono. After becoming ill late Wednesday night, he was taken to an area hospital, where the diagnosis was made. This means he’s out for the start of camp. No date for a return was given. Definitely a bummer for Sun. Mono can knock folks out for a while, and while in the long run he should be fine, this will definitely have a negative impact on his rookie…

sparks spur silver stars in western conf finals

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lisa Leslie had 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists to lead the Los Angeles Sparks to an 85-70 victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars on Thursday night in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals.

The Sparks took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series, which resumes Saturday in San Antonio.

Candace Parker, Temeka Johnson and Marie Ferdinand-Harris each added 14 points for the Sparks. Parker grabbed 12 rebounds and Johnson had eight assists.

Ann Wauters led the Silver Stars with 18 points and Sophia Young had 16. Becky Hammon, who was averaging 19.3 points in the playoffs, was held to nine.

Los Angeles shot 53 percent, outrebounded San Antonio 37-21 and amassed 27 assists to the Silver Stars’ 16.

The Sparks, who trailed by as many as nine points, used an 11-0 spurt to take a 48-39 halftime lead. Leslie led the surge with six points and the Silver Stars failed to score in the final 3:43 of the first half.

Erin Buescher made a 3-pointer and a reverse layup to narrow San Antonio’s deficit to 74-68 with 5:05 to play. But Ferdinand-Harris scored four points during a 6-0 spurt that extended the Sparks’ lead to 80-68 with 2:58 left.

The winner of the series will play either the Detroit Shock or New York Liberty for the WNBA championship.

The game was played at the University of Southern California’s Galen Center because of a scheduling conflict at the Sparks’ regular home court, Staples Center.

i have decided that one of my pet projects this season would be lakers rookie sun yue. i am going to use all of my abilities to get an up close and personal look at l.a.’s first major chinese basketball import. who also happens to be a 6′ 9″ point guard. remember any other 6′ 9″ point guards in laker history? video after the jump…

oh yeah, answer to the question is los angeles… and its starting off a little “shaky”. but more on that later… here’s an intro.

in my whole life basketball in los angeles has been one of my most enjoyed endeavors and as a spiritual athlete equally as formative as any spiritual discipline. my friends and i will share our thoughts, stories, pictures and video culled from the experience of basketball in los angeles. training camp is upon us and i will be sharing my outlooks for the local teams (lakers, clippers, sparks, ucla, usc, high school) and local players in all levels of basketball. i joyously anticipate what is to come.
